We have 19 Categorical and 6 Primary Care PGY 1 positions. All positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

All applications are through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  Candidates are invited for interviews based on their application, including the Medical School Performance Evaluation, personal statement, medical school transcript, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores (Step 1 and Step 2 if available), and three letters of recommendation.

Additional Program Requirements
While we do not have a minimum USMLE score, most of our ranked applicants score above the mean for USMLE Step 1 and 2. We do accept COMLEX scores, althought the USMLE is preferred.

For Foreign Medical Graduates -- You must be ECFMG certified by June 30 of the year you are wishing to start residency. We consider applicants who are less than 2 years out from medical school graduation or those who have been practicing clinical medicine since graduation. The University of Kentucky will only sponsor J-1 Visas. All Visa decisions are made by the Graduate Medical Education office, not by the Department of Internal Medicine.

Please contact our Program Coordinator if you have any further questions.

Interview days are scheduled for most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from late October through January.

The night before the interview, internal medicine residents take the candidates to dinner at a local restaurant. The candidates are provided a hotel room free of charge, excluding incidental expenses at the Hyatt Regency.  Candidates are provided transportation to the University the next morning. We encourage all candidates to ride the hotel shuttle to their interview.
