Favorite Rotation: VA Wards. Veterans are such an honor to serve, and they are grateful for all we do.
Favorite weekend getaway: Cave Run Lake near Morehead KY for fishing, hiking and Pop's BBQ
Why did you choose UK for MedPeds?: Our program feels like a second family. The support and friendship
has been incredible!

Why did you choose UK for MedPeds: The people and the impact we have on UK as a whole as a med-peds program. Med-peds people are everywhere at UK; on peds, IM, and even within leadership at the medical school and GME. This provides you with mentors every step of the way through residency. It also guarantees that there is almost always someone nearby who knows how you think and what it means to be med peds!

Favorite rotation so far: Peds Heme/Onc. We had a great team that month during a very busy month with a lot of very sick kids. I enjoyed the continuity with the patients and families, and I liked the complexity of care.
Did you have a career before medicine? What did you do?: I worked as a carpenter and as a cabinetmaker.

Favorite rotation: Chandler wards (Adult UK wards) - My attendings and upper levels encouraged me to practice every day with a very appropriate level of autonomy, but were always readily available to help when needed, so I never felt abandoned. I learned something new every single day and felt quite fulfilled at the end of each and every day. Its a tough month, but superbly enriching educationally and emotionally.

Why did you choose UK for MedPeds: I chose UK for the Med/Peds family and the supportive loving environment that we've made for each other. I feel that it's unique and wonderful and sets our program apart. I also like that UK gives its residents a lot of autonomy and a great community setting, while still having the benefit of a large research institution and all the opportunities that that affords.

Favorite memory of residency so far: Working long hours (some longer than others) but always being surrounded by amazing people who will let you joke, vent, just talk, or crack up at something ridiculous.
Why did you choose UK for MedPeds: Med-Peds as an entity is respected and well understood here, which was different from what I was used to in SC. Everyone here is wonderful. Our attendings are down-to-earth and always willing to help/teach/turn you into a better doctor. Our residents are the all around best people you'll ever meet. Even if you don't talk to someone as often, they are always willing to help you/hang out with you/do anything you need..

Why did you choose UK for MedPeds?: I knew I wanted to stay at UK for a couple reasons. First the climate between all the residents was gerat, I could tell they were like family and really cared about each other. Second, the med peds residents were fully included in the peds and medicine program and not made to feel isolated. Lastly, I am a Lexington native and wanted to be close to family!

Favorite memory/moment of residency so far?: Serious moment: Our IM team working with our IM floor
nurses, the L&D nurses, risk management, and the chaplains to help our dying patient fulfill his wish of being
baptized...in a birthing pool on the OB wing. Light-hearted moments: team dinners on pediatric call nights and our
Good Samaritan team potluck day and creation of the "Sambucks" station

Career Goals: I’m most interested in Academic Inpatient Med-Peds! I love the tradition of teaching rounds and
having learners of all stages present and learning from each other! I couldn’t imagine not having education as a part of my career!
Favorite place to grab a beer: Mirror Twin: Has great beer and an amazing patio (plus they allow dogs, so who
doesn’t love bringing your pup while you drink). And they have great pizza!
Why did you choose UK for MedPeds: The family! I honestly couldn’t justify going anywhere else. Every Med-
Peds resident and attending I worked with as a medical student treated me like a friend or family member. I knew
that I would be supported and loved in all aspects from career, education and personal life by staying at UK! Dr
Stewart, Dr Trent, Leann, and all the residents have truly been amazing.
