The University of Kentucky offers cutting edge research and clinical technology to its physicians to maintain the highest quality of care and research. It is home to the only NCI designated cancer center in Kentucky, as well as a comprehensive stroke center and level 1 trauma centers for both adult and pediatric patients.
Patients come from all over Kentucky and the surrounding states to be treated which gives students the opportunity to see and help treat a wide variety of illnesses. In fiscal year 2013 the UK Hospital had over 35,000 discharges and 28,638 surgical cases.
In its effort to expand patient care to include better examination and treatment of all forms of pulmonary illness, the division is working to open a lung nodule clinic to diagnose and treat more patients with lung nodules, as well as an intersitital lung disease clinic.
Students have access to work at the outpatient Kentucky Clinic, inpatient UK Hospital MICU, which acts as a referral center for this region of the U.S., and with elderly patients at the VA Medical Center all on the same campus.
