University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine has enjoyed a reputation of progressive innovation since its creation in 1960.

It was the site of:

The development of the first vena caval filter
The first triple cardiac valve placement in the U.S.
The discovery of the first family in the U.S. with antithrombin III deficiency
The first identification in the U.S. of carcinoembryonic antigen in ovarian cancer
The first use in the U.S. of imaging cancers using radiolabelled CEA antibodies
The first Department of Behavioral Science in a medical school in the U.S.
Development of the first balloon facilitated percutaneous tracheostomy technique

Always a center of excellence in tertiary care and research, the University is also recognized as a site of superior training in primary care. In a recent national poll, the UK Chandler Medical Center was ranked among the top 20 centers in the country for training in primary care medicine. In addition, UK was cited for its dedication to patient care by its peers for 2014 with over 100 physicians voted onto the Best Doctors in America list, which includes three of the division's own faculty. In 2014 UK HealthCare also received a number 12 ranking among academic hospitals across the nation by the University Healthcare Consortium and was given a "Rising "Star" award.

  • Awarded Excellence in Life Support by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO)

  • Chandler Hospital earned the 2012-13 Consumer Choice Award for Lexington-Fayette County from National Research Corporation

  • Chandler Hospital ranked No. 1 in Kentucky by U.S. News & World Report in July 2012, with 10 UK specialties ranked high performing: cancer; diabetes & endocrinology; ear, nose & throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology & neurosurgery; pulmonology; urology

  • UK is one of fewer than 60 centers nationwide certified to implant the Total Artificial Heart (TAH), and the first to do so in Kentucky

  • UK Comprehensive Epilepsy Center qualified again as a Level 4 center, the highest level awarded by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers




Lexington, Kentucky is home to internationally recognized Keeneland, Lexmark International, and Alltech. It was ranked No. 5 as a best college town to live in by livability.com in 2013, as well as the No. 27 best place for business and careers by Forbes. UK basketball games are one of the top events to experience, with people from Lexington and the surrounding areas gathering to cheer on UK's wildcats in Rupp Arena.
